Services Provided: Parents Reaching Out serves families of infants, children and youth with all types of disabilities as well as related professionals as New Mexico's Parent Training and Information Center PTI, funded by the US Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs OSEP. Our first responsibility is to inform and educate parents about special education law and the rights and responsibilities they and their child have under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA. Our goal is to provide tools to families to help them make informed decisions as equal partners in their child's Individual Education Program IEP. Our Family Liaisons use telephone assistance, workshops and publications to provide family friendly training to parents, educators and service providers throughout New Mexico. As the NMPTI, Parents Reaching Out: Supports families in obtaining appropriate education and services for their children, Works to improve education results for all children, Provides training and information to parents and professionals on a variety of topics to promote inclusive environments for children and youth with disabilities, Offers strategies to build partnerships between Families and Schools, Provides collaborative and team-building approaches to advocacy, Connects families to community resources that address their needs, Connects families to other families who are going through or who have been through similar situations, NM PTI Liaisons are familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA 2004 for children with disabilities, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA and Section 504. Family liaisons are people who are trained to provide information and support to improve educational outcomes for children in todays schools, We also provide workshops to help parents understand the special education process, including information on: Evaluation, Eligibility, Evidence- based practices, Free and Appropriate Public Education FAPE, Response to Intervention RTI, Student Assistant Teams SAT, 504 plans, Individualized Education Program IEP, Related services, Assistive Technology, Gifted and Talented Services, Parental Rights and Procedural Safeguards, Dispute Resolution, Least Restrictive Environment LRE Placement, Behavioral Issues, Functional Behavior Assessment FBA, Behavior Intervention Plan BIP, Graduation Pathways, and Transition Plans.
