Programs that pay for or provide internal devices (such as hip and knee implants) to provide stability to correct problems that currently exist there; external appliances (such as braces/splints) that improve the functioning of individuals with muscle, joint or skeletal weaknesses, deformities or injuries; products that provide mobility impaired individuals with greater body stability, trunk/head support, the ability to maintain an upright posture and reduction in pressure to the skin while seated; and/or artificial limbs or other mechanisms which replace missing extremities or other parts of the body. Services Provided: Provides grants of up to $250 to fund Assistive Technology that supports participation in functional life activities. Any New Mexican with a developmental disability may apply for a grant that meets the criteria for functional participation. The yearly funding cycle starts July 1 and ends June 30 of the next year. Funds are distributed each year on a first come, first serve basis until the funds are exhausted.

Services Provided: AAC Loan Bank offers SLPs Speech Language Pathologists the opportunity to borrow one or two devices, for 30 days, free of charge. These devices may be used during evaluations to assess for the appropriateness of features that match those of devices currently available from commercial vendors. Language encoding systems, voice output features and physical access to the device may be assessed with available devices. After this evaluation, a request may be made for the individual's insurance plan to pay for rental of the specific device recommended. Technical assistance is available from the SLP consultant to the Therapy Services Unit to determine which devices may be most appropriate for assessment purposes. Switch Evaluation Kit offers therapists a variety of switches and switch operated devices to assess an appropriate type of switch for an individual's use. This kit is for assessment purposes only and is free of charge. Adaptive Eating Equipment Loan Bank offers therapists an array of adapted utensils, dishes and drinking vessels for assessment purposes. Access to this equipment is free of charge.

Services Provided: Provides support and guidance to individuals, interdisciplinary teams IDT and families regarding safe and healthy eating or tube feeding. Any New Mexican with a developmental disability may be referred to this clinic. The multidisciplinary SAFE Clinic Team is comprised of a nutritionist, a physician, a physical therapist and speech-language pathologist. The team provides expertise in the areas of medical support, nutritional analysis, seating and positioning and oral-motor/swallowing function. Each clinic is designed to meet the needs of the referred individual. Recommendations are made for appropriate seating and positioning, eating/feeding techniques, adapted eating equipment, nutritional support and medical support.

Services Provided: Established to promote and provide quality therapy services to individuals with developmental disabilities DD and their interdisciplinary teams IDT and families through resource development, technical assistance, training, and specialized direct services. Carrie Tingley Hospital is the only pediatric rehabilitation hospital in the state, housing a 24-bed inpatient unit in the Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion. We conduct more than 21 specialized clinics ranging in emphasis from brain and spinal cord injuries to development and neurological conditions to juvenile arthritis and clinical genetics. We also provide numerous therapy rooms, Gait labs, wheelchair evaluations, and braces or prosthetics. Children, particularly those with chronic conditions, need specialized healthcare focusing on their unique needs in a child-friendly place. Hospitalized children with chronic and often life-threatening diseases need quick, easy access to surgical and imaging services available at the Pavilion. And, this continuum of care extends to services available at UNM Children's Hospital, UNM Children's Psychiatric Center and UNM Hospital.
